They were not born. They were not held in their mother's arms. Most have not been named. A gravesite to mark their passage is not in the local cemetery. They are the babies who have been lost due to abortion. They are often not acknowledged to have ever existed. Yet, their mother's grieve, not knowing where to seek closure and comfort.
Though they may not be remembered by their parents, it does not mean they are forgotten. In the Bible, God said: "Can a woman forget her nursing child, and have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. Behold, I have carved you in the palm of My hand." Isaiah 49:15-16 NASB.
Memorial plays a role in helping to face unresolved grief.
Every loss must be grieved. When it comes to the loss of a person, we need to give that person the honor of a memorial service and every mother and father needs a time and place for leave-taking.
There are no set rules to follow, no set program that must be kept - you are not required to visit an official memoral that is dedicated to the unborn. It is important that you conduct a memorial - leave-taking event to aide your journey toward closure from a past abortion loss.

July 14, 1987, Davis Cemetery, Davis California.
The first Memorial of Mourning (M.O.M's Day) hosted by Victims Of Choice, area pro-life and local churches. The two caskets were not buried due to city ordinances against burials without death certificates. A woman spontaneously walked forward and placed the carnation she had been given previously near the casket. Others followed her example. Thus the tradition of placing a flower (now a long stem red rose) at a memorial was established. This is the first (known) public memorial to the unborn to be conducted after the legalization of abortion in 1973.
